The first ONTOS demo turns a rescue mission into a decision about which version of a scientist should survive. Presented to press and creators during gamescom 2026, the sequence takes place in Samsara, an abandoned lunar station converted into a scientific laboratory, as detailed in the Xbox Wire post published on September 2, 2026. The game is also expected on console and PC, according to the Xbox news.
Aditi’s immediate objective is simple: retrieve a key attached to Crombie’s neck. The scientist can no longer act after transferring a copy of his mind into a server device made up of rats. Probes and cables block access to the key, forcing Aditi to study the installation before she can decide how to proceed.
Three outcomes, none of them clean
The demo offers three possible solutions. Aditi can shut down the server and try to save Crombie’s body, replace his original mind with the copy, or cut the power without saving either one. The choice changes character reactions and some dialogue.
That structure makes the sequence more than a locked-room puzzle. The player has to decide which version of Crombie to preserve, or accept that neither will survive. Xbox Wire presents the scene as closer to an immersive sim than to traditional survival horror: exploration and clue interpretation drive the tension, while the demo shows neither a creature hunting Aditi nor a stealth section.
Clues reveal the choice, resources determine it
Information about the installation is scattered across terminals, audio logs, locked cabinets and the experimental server. Doors open manually, and drawers and other objects can be searched and examined. The investigation reconstructs what happened, but understanding the solution does not guarantee that Aditi can immediately execute it.
Her blowtorch, needed to cut the cables, depends on the number of oxygen canisters she finds. Exploring only part of the station can therefore leave Aditi with a clear moral decision but without the resources required to carry it out. The connection between investigation and inventory gives the station’s optional routes a direct consequence.
ONTOS is planned for 2027
ONTOS is due to release in 2027 on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Xbox Play Anywhere compatibility will let players move between console and PC without an additional purchase. The release month, day, price and editions have not been announced. Xbox Wire also does not confirm that this demo will be released publicly.
The Samsara sequence confirms several outcomes, but not how far their consequences will extend through the full adventure. For now, ONTOS is defined by a specific tension: progress depends on solving the station’s practical problems while deciding what kind of survival is acceptable.
