World of Warships is preparing a weather rework for its Ocean map in Update 15.9. The official Developer Diaries announcement confirms that the update will initially introduce a map-wide cyclone, while thunderstorms and snow are planned for later updates. Theofficial post published on Steam

Ocean keeps its defining layout: there are no islands, so ships cannot use terrain to break line of sight or shape an approach around fixed cover. The weather system changes how that open space is read during the battle, but each match will feature only one weather type rather than storms, snow and cyclones appearing together.

The cyclone changes Ocean’s opening minutes

With Update 15.9, the cyclone will become active very early and cover the entire map. While it is in effect, visibility and detection range will be reduced to 15 km. That makes long-range engagements harder to establish and limits detection across the opening phase.

The cyclone is not permanent. The announcement says it will dissipate after 7 to 9 minutes, after which conditions will clear and the battle will return to open water as usual. Its effects are therefore concentrated at the start of the match rather than spread across the entire game.

Weather zones generally make ships harder to spot and hit while they are inside them. On Ocean, that effect matters because there are no islands to provide a fixed alternative to concealment. Ships that normally rely on terrain or early concealment will instead have to account for visibility that changes over time.

Thunderstorms and snow are future additions

The other two weather types are not part of the initial Update 15.9 availability described in the announcement. Thunderstorms are planned as two separate zones that drift across the map in a circling pattern for about 12 minutes. Inside them, dispersion would increase, firing-detection range would decrease, concealment would improve and the spotting timer would be significantly shorter.

The planned snowstorm would follow a different path. It would begin at the center of the map, spread until it covered the entire area over the next three minutes, then contract back toward the middle. Its visibility and detection effects would match those described for thunderstorms.

These future systems would introduce additional forms of temporary concealment, but their descriptions remain part of the announcement for later updates. For Update 15.9, the concrete change is the cyclone; the thunderstorm and snowstorm descriptions concern later updates.

The visual overhaul is not only for the battle map

The weather rework also adds volumetric clouds to Ocean. The same visual change will affect Ocean Port, extending the update beyond the combat arena itself.

The Developer Diaries post was published on September 29, 2026, but it does not provide a deployment date or time for Update 15.9. It also warns that the announced features and their parameters may change multiple times during testing. The confirmed direction is clear, however: Ocean remains an island-free map, while its early battle flow gains a temporary 15 km detection limit through the cyclone.

For now, players should treat the cyclone’s duration and effects as the current announced design rather than final release guarantees. The update gives Ocean a more variable opening without removing the map’s central identity, while the other weather types remain planned additions subject to testing.
