Battlefield 2042 brings the Battlefield series back to large modern battlefields, with combat built around infantry, vehicles, squads and objectives. The game is set in a near-future world shaped by climate and geopolitical crises, where fighters known as Specialists take part in large military conflicts.

The game includes several multiplayer experiences, including Conquest, Breakthrough, Battlefield Portal and Hazard Zone. Specialists are grouped into four main classes: Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. Each role brings its own strengths, gadgets and team value, whether that means breaking an entry point, stopping a vehicle, reviving allies or spotting enemy movement.

On PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Battlefield 2042 supports battles with up to 128 players depending on the mode and map. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are built around a smaller scale, with a 64-player limit. That keeps the structure of Battlefield intact while adapting the experience to each console generation.

Battlefield 2042 is best suited to players who enjoy open-ended matches, shifting front lines and squad play. Its identity comes from the mix of objectives, vehicles, partial destruction, gadgets and battlefield information, rather than isolated weapon duels alone.
