For a smoother ARK: Survival Ascended progression, stay close to your spawn point and turn nearby resources into useful equipment. The stone pickaxe comes first: it costs 1 stone, 1 wood and 10 thatch. Once crafted, it makes early gathering more consistent.

Set up your first session and controls

For solo play, open the session creation menu, select Host a Server, choose a map, then select Single Player. The official listing also mentions online co-op, local network play, PvP and cross-platform multiplayer. Steam listing It does not detail the conditions for each platform, so an advertised option does not guarantee the same setup on every device or in every session.

After loading in, open your inventory and identify the hotbar and map. The Controls page associates W/A/S/D with movement on PC, Left Shift with sprinting, Space with jumping, E with using, I with the inventory, V with displaying craftable items, keys 0 to 9 with the hotbar and M with the map. That page explicitly concerns ARK: Survival Evolved, so check the controls shown in your version of Survival Ascended before memorising a shortcut.

Your first check is practical: open the correct menu, find a craftable item and place a tool on the hotbar. If a key differs from your setup, follow the controls shown in-game rather than building your progression around an uncertain shortcut.

Craft the stone pickaxe before travelling

The Getting Started page gives the stone pickaxe cost as 1 stone, 1 wood and 10 thatch. Collect those three resources before moving away from the spawn area. You only need to cover the exact cost that unlocks your first gathering tool.

  1. Pick up a stone using the interaction action.
  2. Gather the required wood and 10 thatch nearby.
  3. Open your inventory or the craftable-items display.
  4. Confirm that the three resources cover the pickaxe cost.
  5. Start crafting.
  6. Place the pickaxe on the hotbar and select it once to confirm that it is accessible.

If one material is missing, stay nearby and search for that resource alone. Travelling farther before crafting adds movement without fixing the immediate problem. The pickaxe is ready when it appears in your inventory and can be selected from the hotbar without reopening the menus.

Add the next tool only when it solves a problem

Getting Started lists the axe, cloth armor, campfire and hide armor among the early equipment, but it does not provide every cost for those items here. Treat the list as a set of options, not a mandatory checklist: check the recipe shown in-game and match it to the next action you need.

The axe completes your basic gathering tools. Cloth armor answers an immediate protection need, while hide armor becomes relevant once its resources and recipes are available. A campfire is worth preparing before a trip that will keep you away from the starting area for an extended period.

A practical sequence is the pickaxe, then the axe, cloth armor, the campfire and finally hide armor when the recipes and materials allow it. If gathering slows down, return to your tools. If protection is the problem, prioritise defensive equipment. If the next trip will last, prepare the campfire before leaving.

These early crafts consume resources that could otherwise support exploration. The payoff is a complete basic loop: gather, equip yourself and leave with the item needed for the next step. Avoid spending your remaining materials on a craft that enables no immediate action.

Spend levels on the next obstacle

Getting Started states that levels improve stats and provide engram points. There is no universal spending order for every session, so use each choice to address a concrete obstacle: a stat limiting your preparation or a recipe you can actually afford.

The beginner survivor already knows the Note, Stone Pick and Torch engrams. Before unlocking another one, check whether it answers the next need and whether its resources are available in your current area. If you cannot use the recipe soon, saving the points keeps your progression focused.

Measure the result by the next action made possible, not by the number of recipes unlocked. A useful engram should help you gather, protect yourself or prepare for a trip with resources you already have.

Leave the spawn area when the loop works

Move on when you can gather, craft, equip and find your items again without constantly returning to the menus. The pickaxe should be accessible, the axe should complete your gathering tools, protection should cover the immediate need, and the campfire should be ready if your planned trip will be extended.

Avoid fights until your survival basics and planned equipment are ready. If an expected item is missing, a control remains unclear or every action takes several inputs, stay in the familiar area. A short trip for the next resource is more manageable than a long excursion without a fallback plan.

Early ARK: Survival Ascended progression is therefore conditional: craft the 1-stone, 1-wood and 10-thatch pickaxe first, then add the axe, protection and a campfire when the situation calls for them. Spend levels against the obstacle in front of you, and leave only when your next craft no longer depends on an inaccessible resource.
