Halo: Campaign Evolved changes the generator objective in Two Betrayals, but the original game's version remains authoritative in Halo's canon. Halo Waypoint confirms the distinction in Issue 171 of Canon Fodder: Heart and Soell, dated October 5, 2026.

In Halo: Combat Evolved, Master Chief enters the beam to overload Alpha Halo's pulse generators. In Campaign Evolved, he instead destroys three objects in the generator rooms. For the story's continuity, the original overload takes precedence. The changed objective therefore represents a different way of playing through this event, while the accepted account of Chief's action stays intact.

Different accounts share the same continuity

Halo Waypoint places the different versions of Halo: Combat Evolved's events within Halo's core canon. That includes the original game, the 2003 novelization, the 2011 remaster and Halo: Fireteam Raven. When their accounts differ or contradict one another, the source that makes the most coherent sense of the whole takes priority.

For readers following the story across games and books, that distinction matters: inclusion in canon does not make every conflicting detail equally authoritative. The generator ruling resolves a specific discrepancy without treating an entire retelling as a replacement for everything that came before it.

The Longsword receives a similar clarification. Its accepted model remains the original C709, consistent with Halo: First Strike, rather than the C708 depicted in Halo: Campaign Evolved. Here, the continuity decision concerns the aircraft's identity rather than a mission objective.

Captain Jacob Keyes's request that Master Chief deliver his particular service pistol to Miranda has a different outcome. Waypoint presents it as an addition to the existing canon. Together, these examples show how new material can expand the story even when changed details defer to earlier accounts.

A historian's note explains that the issue originally appeared before the recent news concerning the studio and was subsequently supplemented with comments in bold.

Mark IV shield tests preserve Mark V's distinction

The issue also clarifies the relationship between early shield experiments and their later integration into armor. Prototype energy shield modules have been tested on Mark IV armor since 2531. Fully integrated energy shields remain an advancement specific to Mark V.

The distinction is between testing prototype modules and incorporating shields fully into the armor. The earlier experiments fit into the timeline without giving Mark IV the same technical status as Mark V.

Covenant appearances and religious authority

The appearances of Covenant species in Halo 4 and Halo 5 that differ from their usual models are treated as phenotypic variations. Halo Waypoint also confirms that the Minister of Harmony did not create these species, placing those visual differences within the species' existing diversity.

The Sacristan Order formed after the signing of the Writ of Union, drawing on the most devout clerics, scholars and temple keepers. Its duties broadened over time, and it became the principal guardian of Covenant religious orthodoxy.

For Campaign Evolved, the practical distinction is between a revised depiction and an addition to the story. The original generator overload and C709 Longsword retain priority, while Keyes's request concerning his pistol joins the continuity. A changed detail in the game does not, by itself, settle what happened in Halo's history.
