Onimusha: Way of the Sword has expanded its demo ahead of its September 4, 2026 release on PlayStation 5. The update, published on August 25, 2026 through the official PlayStation Blog post, adds new playable content and accompanies trailer 6, which reveals additional enemies and Musashi’s Oni Awakening.

The revised demo is available on the PlayStation Store. Its playable areas are larger than before, and the Daidara boss is now part of the battles. The change gives players a wider look at the combat system before launch, although the announcement does not provide a version number or detailed technical patch notes.

Daidara gives the demo a tougher combat showcase

Daidara’s addition matters because the demo now covers more than a short introduction to Musashi’s sword fights. The expanded areas and boss encounter should give the preview more room to show how the game handles enemy pressure, positioning and the timing-based attacks described by the development team. The available information does not identify the exact length of the new content or specify whether every area from the full game is represented.

A transferred demo save will also unlock the Kubi Akari charm in the full game and boost Musashi’s stats. The exact transfer procedure, the size of the stat increase and the charm’s detailed effects have not been specified. Those bonuses are therefore confirmed as rewards, but their practical impact cannot yet be measured from the announcement.

Trailer 6 highlights Oni Awakening

Presented at Gamescom 2026, trailer 6 shows new enemies and Musashi releasing his inner power through Oni Awakening. The ability appears alongside the sword combat featured in the official video, adding another element to the game’s Oni-versus-Genma setting. The trailer reveals the system, but the announcement does not detail its duration, activation requirements or limits.

Timing remains central to the swordplay

The accompanying team interview explains two systems behind the fights. Dynamic Dismemberment tracks the blade’s precise trajectory, while Break Issen becomes available when an enemy’s stamina gauge is empty. This version makes the attack accessible under a broader condition than the very strict timing previously associated with it, while still tying the opportunity to enemy stamina management.

The story takes place in Kyoto at the beginning of the Edo period, where the Oni protect the portals that allow the Genma to pass through. The setting is rebuilt without a direct story connection to the previous games, so the new adventure is positioned as an entry point for newcomers as well as a return to the series’ historical fantasy world.
