SteamOS 3.9.4 beta temporarily disables hibernation on Steam Deck because of unresolved driver bugs. Announced on October 22, 2026, the update also brings fixes for Desktop Mode access, loading screens, screenshots and audio output.

Valve lists the release for the Beta and Preview channels, where features remain under testing. The announcement does not confirm availability on the stable branch. Its changes include fixes for regressions introduced in the 3.9 releases, alongside the temporary restriction on Steam Deck hibernation.

Hibernation is temporarily disabled on Steam Deck

The restriction appears among the changes specific to this release in Valve’s notes. Valve attributes it to unresolved driver bugs and gives no date for reactivation. The restriction concerns hibernation; it should not be read as an announcement that regular sleep has also been disabled.

For Steam Deck owners who use hibernation, this is the trade-off when choosing the update: the fixes arrive with that feature temporarily unavailable. Those weighing the fixes against hibernation support have no announced timetable for its return.

Loading screens, screenshots and Desktop Mode get fixes

A regression in the 3.9 releases could leave some applications running behind Steam’s loading screen. Valve names A Plague Tale: Innocence as an affected example. The announced fix addresses a situation in which the application had launched but remained obscured by the loading screen.

Another regression produced 720p screenshots even when both the display and the game were running at a higher resolution. Valve says this mismatch is fixed. The change addresses the unwanted resolution limit without guaranteeing a particular capture resolution for every display and game configuration.

The Desktop Mode fix concerns a different trigger: changing the time zone could prevent users from switching to the desktop until they restarted. Valve says the update fixes that failure, which previously required a restart to regain access.

For sensitive headphones or speakers connected through the 3.5 mm output, Valve reports less frequent audio clicks. This is a reduction in how often the issue occurs, rather than a claim that clicking has been eliminated.

How to read the release notes

Valve’s post collects changes since SteamOS 3.8 stable, so the full list extends beyond the additions in this release. The section titled “New in SteamOS 3.9.4” distinguishes those additions from the broader set of changes since the stable version.

Those additions also include a fix for occasional firmware update failures on Steam Machine. That fix concerns the named hardware. SteamOS also receives improvements to support for dirlock disk encryption, which remains experimental.

To select Beta or Preview, Valve gives the path Settings > System > System Update Channel. Both channels contain features still being tested. For Steam Deck owners considering this release, the practical choice is whether its fixes outweigh the temporary loss of hibernation.
