Gears of War: E-Day advertises cross-platform multiplayer and co-op, with invitations across supported platforms. Before gathering friends on Steam and Xbox Series X|S, check your chosen mode, console online access and account-linking options. The detailed Steam invitation procedure published for the August 2026 beta needs to be treated separately from the full game's features.
Choose your mode before gathering the party
The Xbox listing lists PC and Xbox Series X|S and advertises cross-platform multiplayer and co-op. The Steam page also mentions invitations across supported platforms. Neither announcement provides a complete breakdown of platform and storefront combinations, so check the invitation options in your version before making plans around a particular pairing.
Start by asking which platform and storefront each friend uses. “PC” alone is not precise enough when following account instructions: the Steam linking procedure applies to Steam, while the subscription requirement discussed below applies to consoles.
Choose the activity next. Steam advertises online co-op for two to four players and competitive multiplayer for up to eight players. Use the limit for your intended activity when deciding how many friends to gather; the competitive limit is not a universal cap for every mode.

In its official multiplayer overview, The Coalition describes Horde Siege as a twelve-player mode split into three squads. That total does not establish that a single party can contain you and eleven friends. If you are organizing a large group, check the party limit separately before promising everyone a place together.
Check Xbox online access first

On console, the Xbox listing requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for online multiplayer. Cross-platform support does not replace that access requirement. If a console player cannot join, check their subscription before treating the problem as an account-linking issue.
The requirement is stated for consoles; it does not establish that Steam players need the same plan. Keep those checks separate so that each person resolves the requirement relevant to their platform.
Prepare the session in this order:
- Confirm each participant's platform and storefront.
- Choose the activity and check its player and party limits.
- Check that Xbox Series X|S participants have online multiplayer access through a listed plan.
- On Steam, follow the sign-in or account-linking prompts shown in the current version.
- Send an invitation through the available controls and confirm that everyone reaches the intended party.
Steam account linking: what the beta instructions mean

The official beta FAQ says that an Xbox account had to be linked to send a cross-platform squad invitation from Steam during the August 2026 multiplayer beta. Its procedure was to open the social panel from the main menu, select “Link Account” in the top left and follow the sign-in process.
That is a beta procedure, not a confirmed menu route for the full game. In the current version, follow the prompts actually displayed rather than searching indefinitely for the same button. A changed or missing label alone does not establish that invitations are broken.
The Steam listing describes account linking as optional and associates it with roaming saves, friend connections and cross-platform invitations. Optional linking does not, by itself, tell you which of those features work without a linked account. Equally, the beta's invitation requirement cannot be assumed to remain unchanged in the full game.
If you want to send a cross-platform invitation, check the linking prompts attached to that feature. If you prefer to leave accounts unlinked, check whether the invitation you need is available before arranging the session. The useful result is a friend successfully joining your party, rather than account linking being completed for its own sake.
Agree on the campaign host and difficulty
Official support states that only the host can pause the co-op campaign. Choose the host before starting and agree to tell them when someone needs a break. Other participants should not rely on being able to pause the shared session themselves.
Each player can choose their campaign difficulty independently. A group with different preferences therefore does not need to settle on a shared difficulty setting. Check everyone's selection before continuing, rather than assuming that the host's choice applies to the whole party.
Check campaign progress separately from invitations

Steam associates account linking with roaming saves, but does not detail the synchronized content or transfer restrictions. Successfully joining a friend establishes that the invitation worked; it does not establish that your campaign progress will follow you between storefronts.
Official support also lists up to five campaign save slots. Those slots let you keep several campaign saves, but their number does not establish whether those saves transfer between storefronts. If you plan to continue elsewhere, check that the campaign save you want is available in the destination version before relying on that move.
For a session with friends, first check invitations from the version you already use. Consider a storefront change only after checking the separate save requirements: joining the same party and continuing the same campaign are different outcomes.
