Honkai: Star Rail Beginner Guide: Build Strongly Without Wasting Resources

A strong start in Honkai: Star Rail depends less on collecting every available character than on building four dependable units. Credits, materials and Trailblaze Power are limited enough early on that each upgrade should solve a specific problem.

Prioritize one team. Raise its levels, Light Cones and Traces before chasing perfect Relics. This keeps your resources focused and avoids filling your inventory with expensive gear that may soon be replaced.

Build four characters with complementary roles

Your starting team does not need to be made up of rare units. Give every slot a clear purpose: one main damage dealer, a support, a healer or shielder, and a flexible character who can cover a weakness, control enemies or improve survivability.

An effective team relies on complementary roles, not rarity alone.

Check each character's Path, damage type and abilities. A hypercarry benefits from buffs, Energy or debuffs provided by allies. A Break-focused character aims to break enemy Weaknesses quickly. Replacing your healer or shielder with a second attacker can backfire when area-of-effect damage is already wiping out your group.

SustainHP, defense, healing or consistent shieldingRemoving all survivability for a little more damage

Before a boss fight, open its details and check its Weaknesses. Exploiting them reduces Toughness and can trigger a Break. In practice, a stable team clears battles more consistently than a fragile group.

Upgrade levels, Light Cones and Traces first

Levels, Light Cones and Traces provide reliable gains early on. Chasing a perfect Relic too soon spends resources on a random result, so strengthen your core team before targeting ideal substats.

  1. Raise your main DPS to the cap for your Equilibrium Level.
  2. Keep the other three characters close behind to limit area-of-effect knockouts.
  3. Upgrade Light Cones that match each character's Path.
  4. Unlock Traces tied to the abilities you use most often.
  5. Equip temporary Relics with a suitable main stat.

Do not spend rare materials on every character you obtain. Save them for a unit that genuinely completes your team. A sustain character can fix a major weakness, while a support can strengthen your best DPS. Testing a unit is useful; raising it to your core team's level without a concrete need is much less so.

Choose useful Relic main stats before complete sets

Relics become more worthwhile once content regularly provides high-level pieces. Before then, a good main stat is better than a poorly suited complete set. Read a character's Traces: they often indicate which stats benefit the kit.

Head and Hands have fixed main stats. The key choices are on the Body, Feet, Planar Sphere and Link Rope. A gold Relic with a useless stat remains a poor investment, even after several upgrades.

  • Body: choose a stat that benefits the character's role.
  • Feet: Speed often helps you act sooner; still, check the kit's needs.
  • Sphere and Rope: invest in the damage, Energy or survivability bonuses you need.
  • Substats: treat them as a bonus, not a starting requirement.

Do not pour all your Trailblaze Power into a Cavern of Corrosion as soon as it unlocks. Rewards remain random. Use a temporary set and return to targeted farming when essential abilities are ready.

Spend Trailblaze Power on the next upgrade

Trailblaze Power regenerates over time and is used for materials, Credits, Relics and upgrades. It should not stay capped, because regeneration stops at the maximum. At the same time, avoid spending it on a reward you cannot use.

Open the details for the character you want to improve and select the missing material. The game shows the relevant activity, which helps prevent farming resources for a character you will not play.

  1. If a character can no longer level up, target their Ascension.
  2. If a Trace is locked, farm its material.
  3. If the Light Cone is far behind, upgrade it before Relics.
  4. When the team is stable, devote part of your Power to targeted Relics.
  5. Use Credit and EXP activities when they block an immediate upgrade.

Advance the story without splitting your resources

The Trailblaze Mission unlocks systems, areas and challenges. When it requires a higher Trailblaze Level, strengthen the team needed to clear that step. Complete short side missions if they provide the missing EXP, and save exhaustive exploration for moments when it does not delay a useful Ascension.

Use training content to practise your rotations. Use a support's Ultimate when an ally can benefit from it immediately. Before spending Skill Points, check whether healing will be needed on the next turn.
