In Marvel Rivals ranked, a coherent composition wins objectives more consistently than an isolated hero holding an angle. Enter within healing range, keep cover nearby and spend ultimates to retake or secure the zone.

Build around the objective

Before locking in, identify who creates space, who threatens exposed targets and who keeps the group alive. A stable foundation includes one Vanguard, two Duelists with complementary ranges and two Strategists. This split is not mandatory, but it prevents any role from going unanswered.

Six self-sufficient heroes can win duels away from the point and still lose the zone. Assign one player to lead the entry, another to watch the flank and keep a support available when the first comes under pressure.

Team-Ups are a bonus, not a draft order. On March 20, 2026, the official update removed Duality Dance and Jeff-nado and added Blessing of the Kumiho and Cosmic Cyclone. Check the Team-Up screen before choosing a pairing seen in an older video.

Switch heroes to solve one problem

A useful counter removes an option from the opponent. If a diver is eliminating your Strategists, save crowd control for their entry and position an ally near the targeted support. Fall back slightly so two players can hit them.

Against a shooter on high ground, do not cross their line one at a time. Close off the angle with protection or attack from two directions. A short call is enough: “left high ground after the shield.”

  1. After a loss, name one cause: flank, high ground, lack of healing, enemy ultimate or late entry.
  2. Choose a collective response.
  3. Test it for one full fight without splitting up the group.
  4. If the problem returns, make a single role change.
  5. Measure the result: the objective is contested longer or supports remain alive.

Protecting a Strategist who is holding their ultimate can be worth more than a distant duel. Roles and abilities are detailed on the official hero page. Practice a new pick in unranked matches before taking it into ranked.

Stay near cover and the healing line

Your position must let you shoot, receive healing and retreat. An angle is only valid if it offers nearby cover and a route back. After using a mobility ability, do not push forward if your healing can no longer reach you.

Duelists often benefit from a nearby side angle, allowing their fire to cross with the team's. They should return as soon as a defensive ability is spent. Vanguards set the tempo: push when supports have line of sight, and fall back when they need to hide.

Contesting does not mean exposing yourself to six enemies. One ally can remain on the zone while the group uses doorways, scenery or high ground. Environments and map announcements can be seen in the official media.

Save ultimates for the next window

Before engaging, check which meters are close to charging. Call a simple plan: “control ultimate now, protection saved for their response.” Two ultimates that open the same fight should often be used in sequence.

Save resources when two opponents are eliminated and nobody can contest. Conversely, use them during the final real window for an objective. An unused ultimate at the end of the round is worth nothing.

Track enemy ultimates that have already been used as well. This window lets you take space without burning a defensive response. Energy cost and gain changes are listed in the official balance notes from March 20, 2026.

Prepare before queuing

  • Prepare two heroes per role: a comfort pick and a defensive answer.
  • Check active Team-Ups before locking in.
  • Choose one useful call: entry, high ground, support protection or focus.
  • After every round, correct just one positioning, timing or ultimate mistake.
  • Leave the queue after two matches without useful communication if frustration is affecting your decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Should you play two Strategists in ranked?

Two support sources stabilize long fights. However, they must be able to protect themselves and keep line of sight on the group.

When should you switch heroes?

Switch after two engagements are blocked by the same problem, such as a recurring flank or untenable high ground.

Should I use my ultimate as soon as it is ready?

No. Use it when the team can follow up or during the final opportunity to contest the objective.

How do you counter a diver targeting supports?

Save crowd control for their entry, move an ally closer to the support and fight within healing range.

How do you retake occupied high ground?

Block their firing line or attack from two angles at the same time. Avoid isolated approaches.
