To find Minecraft diamonds, dig below Y=16 and establish a mine around Y=-54. Diamond ore becomes more common at greater depths, but it is also less frequently exposed to open air.

Reach Y=-54 while staying clear of bedrock

Set the tunnel floor around Y=-54. This level offers a practical compromise between lava risk, block exposure and the amount of bedrock you will encounter. Y=-59 remains viable, but bedrock becomes more frequent. No single height is universally perfect; the right choice depends on the trade-off you prefer.
Avoid the old Y=11 marker, which belonged to the previous generation. Modern worlds extend down to Y=-64, while deepslate gradually begins below Y=8.
Prepare the descent before you start digging
Reach the lower levels with a staircase, and never dig directly beneath your feet. A fall or concealed lava pocket can destroy your equipment and resources.
- Bring at least two iron pickaxes or better.
- Keep a water bucket, shield, food and torches with you.
- Add cobblestone or deepslate to your hotbar.
- Bring a crafting table and a few logs.
- Place torches on the same side of the tunnel every time.
A water bucket can stop or redirect a lava flow, while a shield reduces the danger from skeletons. Store ores in a chest near the entrance before extending the trip.
Leave three blocks between each branch
Dig a main corridor two blocks high and one block wide, then open branches of the same size. Space their entrances three blocks apart to expose the walls without repeatedly mining the same areas.
This layout reveals more blocks than simply walking through caves and limits combat. A large quarry consumes more durability and creates more dangerous open spaces.

Use caves as extensions of the mine
A cave between Y=-40 and Y=-59 may reveal exposed ores. However, diamond is less often exposed to air in modern generation, so the branch mine should remain the foundation of the search.
Advance through small areas. Light the floor, walls and reachable heights, then deal with nearby monsters before mining.
When you find a vein, clear the blocks around, above and below it. Lava may be concealed behind the ore. Place water from a safe position or block the source with solid blocks.
Keep promising veins for Fortune III
Breaking diamond ore with a suitable pickaxe yields one diamond without Fortune. The Fortune enchantment can increase that yield, so leave veins in place if you expect to prepare a Fortune III pickaxe soon.
Build an enchanting table with bookshelves, and save lapis lazuli and experience levels. Fortune III is the useful tier for ores.
Silk Touch and Fortune cannot be combined. Use a second pickaxe for ordinary digging and reserve the Fortune pickaxe for valuable ores.
