RuneScape has 29 skills, and each level can unlock different equipment, locations or quests. To avoid wasting XP, choose the next concrete unlock first, then train the skill that removes the obstacle.
This approach works for new players on Steam or mobile, whether they stay with free content or use the optional membership. It does not create a universal build: the right priority depends on the requirement blocking your current objective.
Choose the unlock before the skill
Before changing activities, write down the result you want: a weapon, a piece of armour, a location or a quest. The official skills page presents levels as thresholds for different parts of RuneScape, so a specific target is more useful than simply chasing the fastest level.
- Do not train a skill only because it appears quick to raise.
- Do not increase Attack, Defence or Strength according to an automatic order.
- Do not mistake the free preview of a members-only skill for full access.
- Do not pursue Invention before checking its three level 80 requirements.
- Do not change direction until you have confirmed that the new level removed the obstacle.

Combat skills solve different equipment checks
Attack unlocks more powerful weapons, Defence allows more powerful armour, and Strength is required for certain weapons. These roles overlap in a combat build, but they are not interchangeable.
If a weapon requires Attack or Strength, train the matching skill. If armour is the problem, check Defence instead. Raising one combat stat while ignoring the actual prerequisite can increase your overall level without making the desired equipment usable.
The official RuneScape skills page remains the relevant reference for each skill's function and required levels. It does not establish a build that suits every player, so use a combat route only when it addresses the next unlock on your account.

5 checks before changing activities
- Name the result. Identify the item, location or quest that justifies your next training session.
- Match it to the skill. Separate the roles of Attack, Defence and Strength, then identify the prerequisite for any other skill involved.
- Set the missing threshold. Make the required level your immediate target instead of raising several stats without a defined purpose.
- Check account access. Confirm that the objective belongs to your free content or requires optional membership.
- Test the unlock in-game. Once you reach the threshold, check the equipment, location or quest. If it is still unavailable, find the remaining prerequisite before investing more XP.
Invention needs its own preparation. It is reserved for high-level members and requires level 80 in Smithing, level 80 in Crafting and level 80 in Divination. Track those three thresholds separately; a missing requirement means another skill is the immediate priority.
After each level-up, check three results: the threshold, the account access and the availability of the item or activity. This tells you whether the problem is missing XP or a different prerequisite.

Free accounts and members do not follow the same route
Without membership, most members-only skills can be trained up to level 5 as a preview. That limit reveals part of each system, but it does not provide full progression or every unlock.
The official Steam listing states that optional membership adds 8 skills, more than 120 quests and the entire map. Free players can begin and explore part of RuneScape; members can pursue a broader set of goals. Neither account type benefits from training everything at once.
Steam's listing mentions a French interface and subtitles, Windows 10 or later, macOS 11 or later, a broadband connection and cross-platform play between PC and mobile. These details describe the access framework, not a recommended skill order. The RuneScape Game Info page also presents Gielinor, quests, combat and the game's 29 skills as its broader structure.
Change priorities only when the route is blocked
Keep one active target while its requirement is achievable with your account. Change priorities when the unlock is complete or when membership, another level or a separate prerequisite makes the current route impossible.
If you have reached the stated level but the item, location or quest remains inaccessible, check account access and the other requirements before abandoning your progress. The next step may be another training activity, a different prerequisite or a revised objective—not a complete restart.
Frequently asked questions
Which mistake most often blocks free progression?
Confusing the level 5 preview with full access. Check whether the skill and its desired unlock belong to free content before committing to a long progression.
What should you do before aiming for Invention?
Check level 80 in Smithing, Crafting and Divination, then confirm the required member access. If one threshold is missing, train that skill first.
When should you change your combat build?
Change priorities when the target unlock is complete or another prerequisite blocks the route. Check free access or membership before restarting your progression.
RuneScape rewards a target-led progression: identify the unlock, match its skill, reach the threshold, then verify access in-game. If the result does not appear, investigate the missing prerequisite before spreading your XP across unrelated stats.
