In Valheim, discovering new materials teaches crafting, building and cooking recipes. Reaching the next biome follows a separate milestone: defeat the Forsaken for your current biome, then use the items and skills you gain to move on.
Start with what you are trying to unlock
If a recipe is missing, look for materials you have not discovered before. The Steam page describes this as the way new recipes are learned, though it does not give the ingredients or requirements for individual items.
Use workbenches and crafting stations to make items or refine raw materials. The official FAQ names kilns, smelters and mills as examples of stations; it also says gathered materials are used to make armor, weapons and tools.
If your aim is to enter another biome, focus on the Forsaken milestone instead. Each biome has its own difficulty and resources for making armor and weapons, so newly learned recipes can help with preparation, but they do not replace defeating the Forsaken and using the rewards and skills you gain.
How boss rewards lead into the next biome
Iron Gate gives two examples of rewards that support progression: Eikthyr’s antlers can be used to craft a pickaxe needed in the Black Forest, while The Elder leaves a key for the Swamps’ crypts. These examples show how a boss reward can help open the way forward; they are not a complete list of rewards.
For the Ashlands, Iron Gate recommended defeating The Queen in the Mistlands before setting out, because the item she leaves is useful there. In its article published on March 26, 2024, the studio also said that players who already had that item might need to drop it and pick it up again to trigger the new recipes. That advice concerns this Ashlands recipe issue; it is not a general fix for every missing recipe.
When a recipe issue may be a bug
Some recipe problems have had specific fixes. In the Steam Only section of hotfix 1.0.12, Iron Gate reported that using the Forge of Potential no longer unlocked recipes that were not meant to be available. Patch 1.0.14 fixed a bug that let players craft the Helmet of the Protector directly at the Black Forge. The patch page said rollout to all platforms would take several days, but does not confirm here when each platform received it.
For a missing recipe, begin by discovering new materials and using the relevant crafting stations. For biome progression, follow the Forsaken milestone and use the items and skills you gain. Keep those goals separate: finding a recipe supports preparation, while defeating the Forsaken is the stated step toward the next biome.
