Way of the Hunter ruled out crossplay between PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch. That answer does not establish compatibility across every later version. If you want to buy the game to join friends on another platform, confirm support for your exact combination before spending.

What the launch FAQ actually confirms

The developer FAQ for the original Way of the Hunter answered no to cross-platform multiplayer. Published on August 3, 2022 and updated on August 4, it gives a clear answer for launch: owning the game on PC and PS5 did not mean friends could share a session across those platforms.

THQ Nordic announced an August 16, 2022 release on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Availability on those platforms and multiplayer compatibility between them are separate questions. For a group planning to play together, the crossplay answer matters more than the list of systems on which the game was released.

Keep the date attached to that answer when making a purchase decision. The launch FAQ should not be presented as a complete account of every subsequent version, but its age is not evidence that crossplay was later added, either. Look for a recent official answer that names the platforms your group uses.

Steam co-op and crossplay are different features

The Way of the Hunter Steam page lists online co-op for the original game. This confirms that cooperative multiplayer is an advertised feature of the Steam version; it does not establish that Steam players can join console players.

Before searching for invitation instructions, ask everyone for the exact game title and platform they own. On PC, include the storefront. A group that all owns the original game on Steam has described its setup more precisely than a group saying only that everyone plays on PC. Recording storefronts helps you ask a clear compatibility question without assuming that different PC stores are incompatible.

Include the number of people who want to play together. An online co-op label alone does not tell you whether a session can accommodate your entire group. The useful answer is whether your particular versions can share a session with enough room for everyone, rather than simply whether the game has multiplayer.

Check your group’s setup before choosing a copy

  1. Identify the game everyone owns. Confirm that each person means the original Way of the Hunter. The sequel has separate multiplayer information, so settle the title before comparing platforms.
  2. Write down the full combination. Gather each participant’s platform, PC storefront where relevant, and the group size. Use those details when seeking official compatibility guidance.
  3. Confirm that those versions can play together. For a group split between PC and consoles, keep the launch restriction in mind. A store listing that says “online co-op” does not override it or establish a later change.
  4. Assess a shared version only if necessary. If your existing copies cannot meet the group’s needs, consider whether everyone could use the same version. Confirm compatibility and session capacity first, then check that everyone has the required hardware and is willing to cover any additional purchase.

A useful support question would be: “Can players using the original Way of the Hunter on these platforms and storefronts join the same session, with room for our whole group?” Supply your actual setup. A reply that merely repeats the available platforms does not resolve whether those copies can connect.

If you already own different versions and an invitation fails, describe the platforms, versions being used and what happens when you try to join. A failed invitation alone does not establish its cause. Check compatibility before deciding that another copy is the solution; otherwise, you risk paying without resolving the problem.

Do not confuse the original with Way of the Hunter 2

Steam app 2543830 is Way of the Hunter 2. On Steam, app 1288320 identifies the original Way of the Hunter, while app 2543830 identifies the sequel. Check the product name before using a store page or multiplayer answer to choose your copy.

For Way of the Hunter 2, the Nine Rocks Games FAQ rules out crossplay between PC, PlayStation and Xbox for version 1.0. Nine Rocks Games says it is exploring crossplay, subject to meeting platform holders’ requirements before making any promises. That is an intention to investigate the feature, not a commitment to deliver it, and it does not announce a change to the original game.

If playing across platforms is essential, wait for confirmation covering your group’s exact setup before buying. Using the same version is an alternative to investigate, with hardware, session capacity and possible extra purchases to weigh before anyone commits.
