Haru to Gen will premiere on January 4, 2027 on tvk in Japan. The announcement published by Crunchyroll on October 21, 2026 also introduces a teaser and the main Japanese voice cast for the adaptation of Yuka Oshima’s manga.

A grandfather becomes his granddaughter’s caregiver

The full title is Haru to Gen ~ 70-sei, Hajimete no Kosodate ~. Gen is 70 years old when he takes in Haru, his three-year-old granddaughter, following the death of his daughter Sakura. The premise brings bereavement and the responsibility of raising a child together: Gen must respond to his granddaughter’s needs while facing the loss of his own daughter.

Gen and Haru are affected by the same death, but their positions within the family are different. Haru has lost her mother; Gen has lost his daughter and becomes responsible for the child she leaves behind. Their relationship therefore combines a shared family loss with a change in who provides Haru’s everyday care. For Gen, becoming her caregiver means taking on a parental role late in life.

The 67-year age gap connects directly to the subtitle’s emphasis on beginning child-rearing at Gen’s age. Haru is still in early childhood, while her grandfather is taking on the responsibility of raising her. That distance between their stages of life gives the caregiving premise its particular focus: the older family member must now meet the needs of a very young child.

Bin Shimada and Hiromi Igarashi lead the cast

Bin Shimada voices Gen, while Hiromi Igarashi voices Haru. Mayuko Kazama plays Sakura, completing the announced cast for the family at the centre of the synopsis. Sakura is both Gen’s daughter and Haru’s mother, and her death is the event that leads him to take in his granddaughter.

The original manga is by Yuka Oshima and is published under Kadokawa’s TakeSuku label. Kodai Sato directs the anime at Imagica Infos / Imageworks Studio, with cooperation from Studio Nanahoshi.

For readers of Oshima’s manga, the announcement names the director, production studios and Japanese voices attached to the adaptation. Newcomers can approach it through the family relationship at its centre: Gen becomes Haru’s caregiver as both face Sakura’s death.
