Call of Cthulhu has no crossplay, co-op mode or multiplayer. Edward Pierce investigates Darkwater Island alone on every platform: Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Buying a second copy will not unlock a hidden team feature.

Steam lists the game as Single-player, while PlayStation states “1 player.” The official listings mention no lobby, invitation system or online mode. The name may suggest group play because the tabletop role-playing game is often played with several people, but this Cyanide Studio adaptation is an individual narrative campaign built around dialogue, skills and player choices.

Every version keeps the investigation solo

No version of Call of Cthulhu can join another player’s game. That applies not only to PC-console play: two players using Steam cannot play together either.

Each campaign keeps its own choices, skills and progression. There is no guest character or system that lets a friend take part in dialogue and branching paths. The result is a focused narrative thriller, but not a co-operative adventure.

The platforms do not connect

Call of Cthulhu is available on PC through Steam, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. “Available” does not mean “connected”: every edition starts an independent campaign.

PlayStation Remote Play streams the game to a compatible device, but does not turn it into a two-player experience. Steam Cloud synchronises a save with the same Steam account on PC; it does not connect Steam with PlayStation, Xbox or Switch.

How to investigate alongside a friend

There is no “Multiplayer,” “Online,” “Friends” or “Crossplay” button in the menus. These options cannot be enabled, and no workaround will add them.

  1. Choose the same text and voice language to compare scenes more easily.
  2. Start a new game on your own platform.
  3. Keep a voice call open or sit side by side.
  4. Pause before major decisions and compare your deductions.
  5. Avoid revealing major twists before the other player reaches them.

This does not create co-op, but it allows you to discuss clues without mixing saves. Each player keeps their own choices, skills and progression.

If you want a group game, check that the store listing explicitly mentions “online co-op” or “multiplayer” before buying. The latest news, the News section and our articles can help you find other games suited to that type of play.

Changing platforms means starting again

No official cross-save has been announced. Progress started on PC should therefore not be considered transferable to PS4, PS5, Xbox or Switch. Changing ecosystems means expecting to start an independent campaign again.

Three points are often confused. Steam Cloud synchronises PC saves for the same account, but does not export them to a console. PS4 backward compatibility on PS5 concerns running the game, not automatic progression sharing. Owning two editions also does not let you form a team: each player remains alone in their campaign.

If in doubt, check the features shown on the official Steam page and the official PlayStation page. If a page mentions neither multiplayer, online co-op nor invitation features, you should not expect a group option in the game.
