Choose between DayZ’s DMR and crossbow by checking the ammunition and equipment you can support. The DMR uses .308 rounds and compatible magazines; the crossbow offers recoverable bolts, but those bolts wear when they hit a target.
The crossbow arrived in May 2023, followed by the DMR in November. The specifications below describe their introduction versions. Use them to assess your equipment needs, rather than treating either weapon as an automatic upgrade over the other.
Check your supplies before changing weapons
Start with the ammunition you actually have. Count your .308 rounds separately from your bolts, then inspect the equipment that goes with them. For the DMR, that means checking compatible magazines. For the crossbow, it means checking bolt condition as well as quantity: a recovered projectile has not necessarily retained its original durability.
- If you play an older version, check that it includes the weapon: the crossbow arrived in 1.21 and the DMR in 1.23.
- Count your ammunition, keeping existing supplies separate from anything you still need to find or craft.
- Check your DMR magazines and inspect your crossbow bolts for wear.
- Check whether the sight you intend to use fits the weapon.
- Compare the missing equipment before committing to a change.
If your .308 supply and compatible magazines are already in place, the DMR is a reasonable choice on equipment grounds. If your available supplies instead favour the crossbow, consider whether you can recover bolts and replace losses. This is a way to choose a loadout you can maintain; it does not establish which weapon will win a particular encounter.
The DMR needs rounds and a matching magazine

Update 1.23, released on November 7, 2023, introduced the DMR on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation. It is a semi-automatic weapon using .308 ammunition, with support for 10- or 20-round magazines. Bohemia Interactive describes it as powerful at medium range.
Check ammunition and magazines independently. A stock of .308 rounds answers the ammunition question, but it does not establish that the magazines you have fit the DMR. Before changing your loadout, identify which compatible magazine you can use and which rounds you have available for it.
The capacity difference is straightforward: a 20-round magazine holds more ammunition than a 10-round magazine. A larger capacity does not replenish your supply, however. Keep the amount you can load separate from the total ammunition you have when assessing whether your equipment supports the switch.
The DMR accepts most Western sights, according to its introduction announcement. For a particular attachment, check compatibility rather than assuming that “most” covers every model. If your preferred sight is central to the change, resolve that question before choosing the weapon around it.
Bohemia’s medium-range description gives the DMR a stated role to consider once those equipment checks are complete. It remains the developer’s assessment, rather than a measured comparison with the crossbow or a reason to rank the DMR above DayZ’s entire arsenal.
Crossbow bolts can be recovered, but they wear

Introduced on May 23, 2023, with update 1.21, the crossbow allows you to recover its bolts. Bohemia specifies that bolts lose durability every time they hit their target. Recovery therefore offers reuse with a condition attached: the projectile continues to wear.
After retrieving a bolt, inspect its condition before counting it as part of your usable supply. Quantity alone gives an incomplete picture. A collection of recovered bolts needs a condition check, and recovery should not be treated as a promise of unlimited reuse or a fixed number of shots per projectile.
You can also craft improvised bolts to replace lost ones. That gives you an alternative when recovery does not restore your supply. Keep bolts already available separate from replacements you intend to make, so your loadout decision reflects what you can use now.
The useful distinction is between recovering a projectile and replacing a loss. Crafting supports the latter; it does not by itself establish that improvised bolts match other bolts in damage, range or durability. Choose this replenishment option for its documented purpose without assuming a performance advantage.
The crossbow also supports several sights and scopes. Check the particular attachment you want to use, especially if it is influencing your choice between weapons. Attachment support is a separate question from whether you can sustain your bolt supply.
Check older loot advice against the version

The introduction dates matter when reading older guides: advice written before 1.21 or 1.23 may predate the crossbow or DMR respectively. The DayZ Steam page currently lists more than 50 types of firearms on Windows PC, with their specific magazines and ammunition. That is a description of the current selection, not the arsenal available at the start of 2023.
Version 1.23 also rebalanced high-tier firearm distribution inside and outside the contaminated zones of Chernarus and Livonia. Before following an older weapon-search route, check which version it covers. Advice that predates that redistribution needs reassessment before you use it to plan your search.
Choose the DMR when your available .308 rounds and compatible magazines support the switch; consider the crossbow when your bolt supply and replacement options better fit your equipment. Reassess when those supplies change, and check your preferred sight before committing.
