The Queens of Jerusalem There are several playable queens of Jerusalem, and they all fit at or near the beginning of the list, so they are first. Isabella I d’Anjou (1191-97) Maria Aleramicci (1205-9) Isabella II de Brienne (1212-27, a child until 1227) Alix de Blois (1228-46, not supposed to be queen) Your goal: turn back Jihads, support Crusades, and crush the infidels! Deus Vult! Illona/Helena Arpad, Queen of Croatia, 1090 A widowed childless princess who starts with her brother, the King of Hungary, as an ally and I think an heir. Pretty sure she's in her 40s. Your goal: try to get an heir before she goes infertile! Or enjoy Hungary-Croatia. Either is fine. Mahaut d’Artois, Countess of Artois, August 1302 Mahaut has the Quick trait! She's 34 and married with three non-dynastic children, but she also has a nephew of her dynasty. Your goal: get rid of the husband, kids, and maybe nephew. Then start fresh. Tyranny won’t matter much, as she has few vassals and subjects. Matilda d’Avesnes, Princess (in-game Duchess) of Achaia, late 1316 She's 23 and childless, but by the time you start, she has apparently been twice widowed. She is a vassal of the king of Naples. Your goal: reunite Greece, become independent, then perhaps go for Neapolitan Constantinople. Tamari "the Great" Bagrationi, Queen of Georgia, 1184 This ruler (who is unmarried in this start) expanded Georgia and brought on a golden age - try to live up to her name. Your goal: take over the infidels around her as well as the two de-jure Georgian counties she doesn’t have yet. Beware of a Rumite invasion! You may also be able to play as her daughter Rusudan between 1223 and 1245; I think I’ve seen her as a ruler in game when fooling around with later start dates. Jeanne de Blois, Queen of Navarre, 1274-1284 She began her reign when she was 1 in late 1274, and she was married (very young) in late 1285. Definitely start before that. Historically, she led armies, and she is able to as of patch 2.4. Your goal: expand Navarre and take France if you can! Marie de Blois, Countess of Boulogne, 1160 Marie is a Norman princess with two counties and a hereditary weak claim on England. She's 24 and childless, but she's married. Divorce or successfully plot to kill her husband before she has a son! Your goal (this is hard): claim most of France and Aquitaine, as well as all of England, from her second cousin Henry. Matilda di Canossa, Duchess of Tuscany, 1066 Yes, that Matilda. She’s a vassal of the HRE, starts 20ish, childless, and unmarried, and controls several counties in Italy (with room to expand - she can fabricate a claim on Lombardy via plot in most games). She is also able to lead armies as of patch 2.4, like she did historically! Your goal: form the Kingdom of Italy after taking control of as much of the de jure kingdom as possible. Jeanne Capet, Countess of Navarre, 1327 Jeanne is 16 and unmarried. She has hereditary claims on the Duchy of Champagne (strong) as well as the kingdoms of Navarre and France (weak). Her uncle and liege might sometimes make her Duchess of Navarre soon after you start, but I haven't seen this happen yet. Your goal: acquire Champagne and Navarre and press your claim on France. Used in GOTW. Jimena Diaz, Countess of Valencia 1099-1102 She's El Cid's widow and a satellite vassal of the king of Castille. Your goal: help your liege fight the Almoravids. Take over your other Muslim neighbors, the far weaker Hudids, on your own. Jeanne de Dreux, Countess of Penthievre, April 1331-1337 Third in line to succeed her uncle and liege, the Duke of Brittany. She's 12 in 1331, so you can build her traits as you wish. Your goal: clear the way for her to inherit Brittany, which seems to have happened historically. Then go for the kingdom! Yolande de Dreux, Countess of Penthievre and Angouleme, 1252 Widowed with a son and a daughter... I would say she’s in a tough situation, but she can easily claim Brittany from her brother with some well-placed alliances. Your goal: usurp the Duchy of Brittany, of course. Get rid of her inconvenient non-dynastic son as well. Berenguela “the Great” d’Ivrea, Queen of Castille, June-August 1217 This queen had an incredibly short real-life reign; she abdicated in favor of her son Ferdinand III after just two months. Your possible goals: begin the Reconquista two and a half centuries early, of course - and unite the northern half of Iberia as well. Petronila Jimena, Queen of Aragon, August 16, 1157 The last of the Jimena dynasty. She is 24 and married (to a duke) and has one newborn child at this start. Your goal: Kill/divorce the husband, kill the kid (if it's a boy), and remarry matrilineally. And then... reconquistaaaaaa!!! Teresa Jimena, Duchess of Portucale, May 22, 1112 She's independent, but she's married and is the mother of the future first king of Portugal. She has Castille and Aragon (really Navarra) as allies, so holy war probably won't be an issue. Your goal: divorce/kill her husband, kill her son/change to Ultimogeniture, and remarry matrilineally. Also, if you can, get her legitimized. And as usual, reconquistaaaaaaa!!! Urraca Jimena, Queen of Leon and Castille, 1109-1126 This powerful queen became Empress of All Spain during her reign, but this isn't reflected in game. She led armies against her half-sister (yeah, another girl!). Unfortunately, she has a 4-year-old non-dynastic son who is the king of Galicia. Disposing of him will be hard! Your goal: actually become Empress of Hispania. And get rid of your non-dynastic son. Tyranny is permitted. Urraca Jimena, Countess of Zamora, 1066 A relative and vassal of the Jimena kings. She led armies, like her relative of the same name. Your goal: If you have claims, take control of the Jimena lands. Adelaide Karling, Countess of Vermandois, 1080 She may seem like your average noblewoman, but she happens to be the last surviving Karling. She's married to the heir to France and has a newborn daughter, so this is a difficult start. Your goal: restore the Karlings the hard way! Eudokia Makrembolites, Basilissa of the Byzantine Empire, June-December 1067 The widow of the former emperor. She has non-dynastic heirs, and she's 37 (in-game, but she was 46 or so in real life). Your goal: get a dynastic heir and end the megawar against the Seljuks before it's too late! Isabelle de Mellent, Countess of Gloucester, 1184 She is 12 in this start, but ahistorically, she is unmarried. She controls three counties. Fun fact: she historically married a Plantagenet, specifically the future King John "Lackland" of England! Your goal: If you can get enough money, you can usurp the Duchy of Deheubarth. Then go for independent English Wales. Ermesinde de Namur, Countess of Luxembourg, 1197-1247 The last of her dynasty (at least in game). Her rule began when she was 10. Her claim on Namur and husband/ally are not in the game, so... Your goal: secure a more powerful alliance and claim Namur. This will likely be hard. Ermengarda de Narbonne, Countess of Narbonne, 1143-1197 She never had children, so even if you have to dispose of a husband, getting a dynastic heir should be easy. Historically she was a very cultured lady. Your goal: work your way up. Become Queen Regnant of France! Konstanza de Penthievre, Duchess of Brittany, late 1186 Apparently the last Breton duchess of Brittany; she succeeded after her husband (Henry II's son Geoffrey) died in a riding accident. She is 25 and widowed; she has three Plantagenet daughters from her first marriage but no sons until March 1187. Historically she would marry two more times and die in 1201. Your goal: become Queen of Brittany (you just need one county and 385 gold) and then unite the Celtic realms! Aliaenor (Eleanor) de Poitou, Duchess of Aquitaine, April 9-July 21, 1137 This is the famous Eleanor of Aquitaine, arguably the wealthiest and most powerful woman of her time. She didn't marry as many times as she seems to in CK2, though! If you want her unmarried with all her rightful titles, you can only play her between the dates above. She's 15. Your goal: become the queen regnant of France... and then England, if you have enough power and time. Lucia de Poitou, Countess of Tripoli, October 19, 1287 The last (Christian) ruler of Tripoli and sister of Bohemond VII of Antioch. She is married to a rather useless count. Your goal: get rid of her husband and avoid the Mamluks, who would love to have your land along with Jerusalem, Cyprus, and Armenia. Hawis de la Pole, Countess of Powys, June 1-July 25, 1309 The last playable Welsh ruler in the game. She’s unmarried in the dates above, so you can prevent her historical husband from taking over. There is no Wikipedia page for her yet. Your goal: claim all of Wales (you only control a couple counties), and restore the last members of Houses Mathrafal and Aberffraw (your courtiers) to their thrones. Zabel Rubenid, Queen of Armenia, 1220s She’s 4 in 1220, so you can make her into whatever kind of ruler you want. Your goal: take the lands around you that aren’t too big, like Antioch, Jerusalem, and Archa (the Hashashin base). You may do this while a vassal of the Byzantines, who would love to have you within their realm. Sunniva Stibolt, Countess of Värmland, 1081-1110 An ahistorical direct vassal of the King of Sweden. Your goal: since she is a contemporary of the first af Bjalbo ruler (a count), try to outdo him and go for Scandinavia! Margareta Ulv, Countess of Närke, 1281-1291 A historical character, but there is no English Wikipedia page for her yet. Her dynasty is a cadet branch of the af Bjalbos, so she is most likely a vassal of the King of Sweden. Fun fact: she was the mother-in-law of St. Bridget of Sweden! Your goal: Your cadet branch dynasty is in danger of dying out. Get a matrilineal marriage, secure a heir of your dynasty and become something more than a countess. Your cousins in the main branch of the family are kings and dukes, so you deserve that sort of title too. Johanna van Vlaanderen, Duchess of Flanders, 1205 She's 10 and a pretender to the Latin Empire. Need I say more? Your goal: get her an education in intrigue, remove any pesky half-siblings, then deal with her dad, Emperor Boudewijn/Baldwin. Then she’ll inherit the Latin Empire! Margaret "the Maid" Yngling, Queen of Scots, late 1286-1290 The real Margaret died at age 7 in 1290, sparking a succession crisis, but you can make this adorable little girl into a graceful ruler - or a fearsome one. Your goal: take control of Norway, which is held by her father. Remove half-siblings, and then Daddy dearest, and unite the North! Muslim Characters Muslim women cannot marry matrilineally, so they're generally very hard to play unless you convert religion or somehow start with a dynastic son. The general starting goal for these is to get a dynastic heir, and fast. Shajar al-Durr, Sultana of Egypt, 1250 She's 35 and married with a stepson. It should be easy to dispose of her duke husband, because she is an Elusive Shadow and he has pretty bad Intrigue. But she needs an heir... Warning: you may get a Crusade called on you, even though k_Jerusalem exists and is huge. Your goal: either convert to Miaphysitism and have a legitimate kid before it’s too late, or use Way of Life, seduce a guy with great congenital traits, and legitimize the bastard. Raziyya Ghulam, Khatun of Rajastan, December 1236 A serious tomboy (she called herself a Sultan and not a Sultana or Khatun, and she dressed and ruled as a man) and the only independent Muslim ruler in India. She led armies like a man, too, and she will be able to as of patch 2.4! Your goal: remove her incompetent siblings from succession, distribute her vast holdings, and wipe out megarevolts. And convert to Hinduism to marry matrilineally. Or you can just use the seduction trick. Safvat ad-Din Padishah Hatun, Duchess of Kirman (?), 1292 A duchess under the Ilkhanate. Ruler-design her to be diplomatic, attractive, and a poet, as she was historically. You may also play as her mother, Turkan Hatun, in 1279. Your goal: work your way up to a queen or higher. Abisha Hadud Salaghurid, Countess of Shiraz, 1264 The last of her dynasty, it seems. Vassal of the Ilkhanate. Your goal: as with Safvat, work your way up. Slowly. Mamam Khatun Saltukid, Beylerbayan of Erzerum, 1191 She's 40, unmarried, and a vassal of Rum... and somehow she has two dynastic sons! Your goal: try to survive for longer than the 9 years she ruled in real life. And become Sultana of Rum. Ruler Designer is recommended if the randomized stats aren't good enough for you. Zainab Tari Soomra, Maharani of Sindh, 1100 A ruler whose reign was historically peaceful, with no invasions and not very much expansion. Her dynastic - yes, dynastic - son was born this year. After ruling for 10 years, in 1102, she abdicated in favor of her much younger brother, who had by then come of age. She was a regent, except she ruled in her own right. Your goal: go ahistorical and start expanding. And of course, don't abdicate. Dharmic Characters (Buddhist/Jain/Hindu) Note for Dharmic characters: it seems that when you start as a Dharmic woman, there is a dead placeholder for her in the start menu. Also, no marriage candidates will show up for her, so you will need to seduce someone, have a bastard, and legitimize the child to get an heir. This may have been fixed in 2.4, but I'm not entirely sure because I haven't had the chance to update. Ballamahadevi Alupa, Thakurani (countess) of Honnore, 1275-1284 (Hindu) A vassal of the Hoysalas. She's too old to have kids (57), but she has a dynastic son because the Alupas had a matrilineal marriage system! There's no Wikipedia page for her yet. Your goal: Start usurping titles from your liege. And become the liege. Rudramadevi Kakatiya, 1259 (Hindu) Yep, she's playable! But due to lots of glitchy weirdness as well as a non-dynastic son, you need to start as her dad, who will die soon afterward and has no other heirs. Fun fact: she actually led armies. Your goal: have fun conquering what you can! Devala Vaghela, Beylerbayan of Saurashtra, 1337 and earlier (Hindu, but vassal of a Muslim) A duchess under the Tughluqs, and the Khiljis before them. She existed historically, but did not rule. There's no Wikipedia page for her yet. Your goal: if you keep your relations with your liege good, you could get the kingdom you want. Whether you do or not, conquer the area around you in the name of your liege. Pagan Characters (Germanic/Slavic/Suomenusko/Romuva/West African/Tengri/Aztec) Sokhatai Batyabar, Duchess of Alatay, 1066 start (Tengri) An ahistorical independent Mongol ruler added in the newest patch! Should be 34, unmarried, and childless. Your goal: unite the Mongols centuries early - as a woman or a descendant of a female ruler. Could be hard depending on succession and the ability (or inability) to matri-marry. Dobrova Turov, Countess of Kiev, 769 (Slavic) Another ahistorical independent ruler. Young (18?), unmarried, and childless. Your goal: conquer your neighbors (which isn’t super-hard if you train enough troops) and form Rus, which is supposed to exist already but doesn't, as a woman!
