[Guide] Build a Destiny 2 PvE loadout that works from the Portal to your first dungeon

A reliable Destiny 2 PvE build covers three jobs: clearing groups, handling champions and saving heavy ammo for the boss. That foundation remains useful in the Portal, during seasonal progression and in early dungeons.

Do not upgrade several weapons and armor pieces at once. Keep a versatile loadout, read the modifiers and replace a piece only after identifying what is holding you back.

Start with three clear combat roles

Choose the subclass you know best. Add a weapon that handles regular enemies, then prepare a solution for the announced champion. Finally, keep your heavy weapon for elites, vehicles and damage phases.

Orbs of Power make this loop more consistent. Equip mods that create them through eliminations, then add useful effects when you pick them up. Do not copy a complete loadout if you lack its Exotic, catalyst or perks.

SlotPriorityUse
Clearing weaponA weapon you have mastered at close or medium rangeIt eliminates regular enemies without draining your special ammo.
Utility weaponA weapon or ability compatible with the displayed championsIt prevents a champion from blocking your progress.
Heavy weaponAn option reserved for bosses and major enemiesIt secures damage phases.
ArmorSurvivability, core ability, then comfortAn available ability and good survivability save time.
ModsOrbs, bonuses when picking them up, then abilities or weaponsThey create a simple loop to follow during combat.

Mobility mainly supports the Hunter, Resilience the Titan and Recovery the Warlock. Discipline, Intellect and Strength reduce grenade, Super and melee cooldowns. First level the stat that protects your character or supports their core ability.

Read the Portal before launching

  1. Open the Portal from orbit and select the activity.
  2. Read the difficulty, modifiers and reward forecast.
  3. Identify champions and shields, then choose your countermeasure.
  4. Save heavy ammo for the boss instead of wasting it on groups.
  5. Test your Orb mods in a short activity.
  6. Save the loadout only when it meets all these needs.

The Portal also displays the score to reach. Activities built around eliminations, objectives or waves demand different approaches. In a solo Op or Exotic mission, ignoring objectives can lower your score. In Onslaught, hold your position and prepare your ammo before the next wave.

Choose the right dungeon for farming

Alternate between a Portal activity and a specific loot objective. Daily and weekly challenges from the seasonal hub advance the weekly track. Check their requirements before choosing an Operation. Weekly rewards are account-wide, so start with those that benefit all your characters.

Since update 9.7.0, two dungeons have been featured each week. Their tier 5 weapons and armor can be farmed in both Standard and Master. Dungeons outside the rotation award tier 3 gear. Wait for the featured dungeon if you are looking for a specific weapon.

Master mode does not guarantee a better real return. Move up when your fireteam already completes Standard without difficulty, covers champions and keeps heavy ammo for the boss. A fast Standard loop is often more useful for learning an encounter and sorting through drops.

Keep useful weapons and avoid duplicates

With limited inventory space, keep one reliable weapon in each slot and avoid duplicates at the same range. A craftable weapon can strengthen this foundation after its pattern is unlocked at the Enclave. A weapon obtained with good perks remains worthwhile even if it is not craftable.

Solo players should prioritize control, healing or a way out of danger. In a dungeon, split clearing and boss damage if your fireteam knows the encounter. Every player must still be able to answer the champion they encounter. That self-sufficiency limits wasted attempts.
