SteamOS 3.9.4 temporarily disables hibernation on Steam Deck because of outstanding driver bugs. Announced by Valve on October 22, 2026, the Beta and Preview release also fixes several regressions from earlier versions of the 3.9 branch. It remains a testing release.
Screenshots and applications hidden at launch
Earlier 3.9 releases could limit screenshots to 720p even when both the game and display were running at a higher resolution. Valve says this regression is fixed. For players affected by the cap, the change addresses the resolution of saved screenshots; it is not an announcement of higher game rendering resolution.
Another regression left some applications behind Steam’s loading screen, preventing their image from appearing as expected. A Plague Tale: Innocence is among the examples Valve names. The fix concerns applications being obscured by that screen, rather than a general claim that every launch problem or freeze in the game has been resolved.

Hibernation paused, Desktop Mode access repaired
On Steam Deck, hibernation is temporarily disabled while driver bugs remain. That is a functional restriction alongside the fixes in this release, particularly for anyone who uses hibernation. Valve’s announcement concerns hibernation specifically; it should not be read as an announcement that ordinary sleep mode has been disabled.
The Desktop Mode fix addresses a different, specific sequence of events. Changing the time zone could previously prevent users from switching to Desktop Mode until they restarted. Valve says this bug is fixed, addressing the interruption that followed a time zone change.
The update also reduces the frequency of audio clicks through the 3.5 mm output when sensitive headphones or speakers are connected. The wording matters for anyone affected by these noises: Valve reports fewer clicks, rather than their complete elimination.
Available through Beta and Preview
Valve gives Settings > System > System Update Channel as the path for joining the testing channels. Beta and Preview include features still being tested, so the presence of these fixes does not make this a stable-channel release.
Valve’s patch notes also cover changes since SteamOS 3.8 stable. They distinguish the additions in 3.9.4 from the cumulative changes across the 3.9 branch, so the full list should not be treated as a list of features introduced by this update alone.
A separate platform-specific fix concerns Steam Machine, where firmware updates could occasionally fail to apply. Valve says those failures are fixed; this item applies to Steam Machine, not Steam Deck.
For users encountering the screenshot cap, hidden applications or the time zone-related Desktop Mode bug, this release offers targeted fixes. Steam Deck users considering the testing channels also need to account for the temporary loss of hibernation.
