[Guide] When to sell, discard, or trade resources in FFXIV

FFXIV resources do not all follow the same sorting rule. Before selling, discarding, or trading an item, identify its category, purpose, and storage location. The official UI guide provides the relevant reference points, while the Lodestone’s official Play Guide brings together general information and patch notes.

These sources explain how FINAL FANTASY XIV’s systems work, but they do not establish a universal list of materials to keep, a target price, or a guaranteed return for every character. The safest decision starts with the item in front of you and the operation you are considering.

Check the item’s role before making room

The inventory and Armoury Chest help you locate items and gear, but an occupied slot does not prove that its contents are disposable. Gear may be equipped, compared with your current piece, or reserved for a gear set. Other items may be connected to an acquisition record, a collection use, a crafting material, or a currency.

For gear, begin with its location and item level, then compare it with the piece currently in use. Recommended gear, gear sets, and repairs serve different purposes, so check each one when the item could matter for immediate preparation. A piece that is weaker for your current character may still belong to another set. The available documentation provides no general rule allowing you to sell it without this check.

Acquisition or registration status is a separate question. The Checking if Items Have Been Obtained/Registered section can show whether an item has already been registered or obtained. It does not replace the category and intended-use checks, but it prevents every duplicate from being treated automatically as excess.

Storage should be checked before disposal. Keeping Your Inventory Clear, the Armoire, and the Glamour Dresser are not interchangeable, and each addresses a different kind of item. If the immediate problem is a full inventory, first look for the appropriate storage option; selling or destroying an item may be unnecessary.

Follow this order before selling or discarding

First, locate the item without immediately opening a selling option. Note whether it is in the inventory, the Armoury Chest, or another storage space. This separates a storage problem from a decision about the item’s usefulness.

Next, identify what you are handling: gear, an obtained or registered item, a material, a collection item, or a currency. The distinction matters because the procedure for gear is not the procedure for a resource, and a currency should not be treated like an ordinary inventory item.

For gear, check the item level and comparison with the piece currently in use. Then review recommended gear, gear sets, and repairs if the item could support immediate preparation. If it does not have a clear role after those checks, keep it temporarily rather than presenting an unverified keep-or-sell list as an official rule.

For other items, check their acquisition or registration status and look for a suitable storage solution. If you still choose to sell or discard them, confirm that the action matches the item’s actual function. The sources do not provide a universal priority order for resources or currencies.

Keep sales, purchases, and exchanges separate

1. Locate the item or currency. Check the inventory, Armoury Chest, or relevant storage space before opening an operation.
2. Identify its function. Separate gear, obtained or registered items, materials, collection items, and tomestones.
3. Check its status. Use Checking if Items Have Been Obtained/Registered when an item may be registered or may already have been obtained.
4. Compare gear when needed. Check item level, comparison, recommended gear, gear sets, and repairs.
5. Resolve the space problem. Review Keeping Your Inventory Clear, the Armoire, and the Glamour Dresser before selling or discarding.
6. Confirm the operation. Use Buying and Selling Items for a purchase or sale. That section explains the operation, but it does not establish a price, return, or priority absent from the sources.
7. Handle tomestones separately. Consult Allagan Tomestones, then Exchanging Tomestones, before confirming an exchange.
8. Recheck after interface changes. The Lodestone Play Guide links to patch notes, and the UI guide lists its last update as August 4, 2026.

Change procedures as soon as the operation changes. A sale, purchase, and tomestone exchange may involve items from the same inventory, but they require different checks.

Common mistakes when clearing an inventory

Selling an item immediately because a slot is occupied is the main mistake to avoid. Check whether it is gear, a registered item, or something intended for dedicated storage before deciding that it should leave your inventory.

Do not confuse an operation guide with a recommendation. Buying and Selling Items explains how to buy or sell, while Exchanging Tomestones explains the corresponding exchange. Neither confirms that an item should be bought now, that an exchange is profitable, or that one currency has universal priority.

Old values and former presets also need context. They may serve as references, but they do not automatically become current rules or configurations for every character. The same limitation applies to resource lists: without an official hierarchy, their usefulness depends on the intended use and the character’s situation.

Keep the decision reversible when the role is unclear

Revise your choice when a verifiable detail appears: the item is unregistered, the gear matches an available set, a suitable storage location exists, or the operation belongs to another category. If its role remains unclear, keep it temporarily and return to the official section that matches its function.

For updates, use the Lodestone’s Play Guide and the official UI guide, then repeat the checks suited to the item.
