Which VALORANT Agent Should Beginners Unlock First?

When choosing a VALORANT Agent as a beginner, start with a role that is easy to explain to the team. Brimstone closes off sightlines, Sova reveals an area, and Sage slows a push. A well-understood Agent helps more than a collection of rarely played characters.

A team does not need all four roles in every match. However, a varied composition makes attacking, defending and retaking easier. Above all, look for the function your allies are missing.

Start with the role your team lacks

The Duelist takes space when their allies are ready to follow. The Initiator prepares that entry by revealing or disrupting defenders. The Controller temporarily blocks sightlines. The Sentinel watches an area and slows opponents.

Your role does not determine your result. A Duelist should not die alone at first contact. A Controller should not save their smokes until the final second. Before locking in an Agent, ask yourself what action their ability will make easier for the team.

Brimstone leads the way with his smokes

Brimstone offers a clear first look at the Controller role. Before the barrier drops, open his tactical map. Identify two angles that can see your entry. Place a smoke on each, then move in with an ally.

His Incendiary delays a retake, prevents a defuse or clears an identified corner. Do not throw it at the start of the round. The fire zone remains on the ground and can also hinder your team.

  1. Call the chosen site before placing your smokes.
  2. Block long sightlines without closing off your allies' exit.
  3. Move in as soon as enemy vision is reduced.
  4. After planting, save the Incendiary for the Spike or a confirmed angle.

Avoid using three smokes in the same place. Two blocked sightlines create space. Overlapping smokes mostly remove information from your team.

Sova teaches you to seek information

Sova teaches an essential habit: seek information before exposing yourself. His Recon Bolt reveals enemies in its line of sight. It can be destroyed. Fire it from cover, then wait briefly before peeking.

A reveal does not replace teamwork. It tells you where to place your crosshair, which area to avoid or when to push. Save the Shock Bolt for a trapped enemy, a narrow area or a revealed position.

  • On attack, send out Recon before the first player goes through the doorway.
  • On defence, confirm pressure before leaving your site.
  • During a retake, reveal an area and then advance with an ally.

Sage defends and buys time

Sage stabilises rounds. Her Ice Wall divides an area. Her Slow Orb slows a push. Her heal rewards an ally who survived a trade. Keep at least one answer for the enemy's real commitment.

On defence, place the Wall where enemies will have to break it or go around it. Then listen to their response and inform the team. On attack, the Wall can cover the Spike plant. Never block your own allies' exit.

Spend Kingdom Credits methodically

New accounts receive unlock tokens during their initial progression. After an Agent Recruitment Event, unowned Agents can also be obtained in the Agent Store with Kingdom Credits, VP or a token. Riot states that Kingdom Credit purchases are non-refundable.

Start with a Controller if your team lacks one. Then pick an Initiator. Finally, choose a Sentinel or Duelist depending on how you play. If you already own a suitable Agent, save the token for later.

Build a routine before locking in

Test one ability at a time in the practice range or an unranked match. Check its equip time, firing angle and practical use. Up-to-date profiles are published on the official Agent list. Game changes appear in Riot's patch notes.

  1. Choose Brimstone, Sova or Sage.
  2. Play two rounds with one goal only: smokes, information or slowing.
  3. After every death, check whether your ability helped an ally.
  4. Only change Agent after a full match.

Brimstone cuts off sightlines. Sova provides information. Sage makes the opponent lose time. These fundamentals leave more attention for aim, trades and well-timed abilities.

Frequently asked questions

Which Agent should you unlock first on a new account?

Brimstone is a simple choice if you do not have a reliable Controller. His smokes cut off sightlines before an entry.

Do you need all four roles on every team?

No. However, a varied composition gives you more options to enter, defend and retake a site.

How do you get an Agent after their Recruitment Event?

The Agent joins the Agent Store. Depending on the account options, they can be obtained with Kingdom Credits, VP or a token.

Are Kingdom Credits spent on an Agent refundable?

No. Riot states that Kingdom Credit purchases for Agents and their gear are non-refundable.

How do Sova's Recon Bolt, Brimstone's smokes and Sage's Wall work?

Sova's Recon Bolt only reveals enemies in its line of sight, and opponents can destroy it before its scan. Place Brimstone's smokes just before entering so they block long sightlines without closing your team's route. On defence, place Sage's Wall across a route that opponents will have to break through or go around; the time gained lets your team reposition. Riot updates Agent pages and its patch notes.
