Mode Switch is presented as a new system for the future Coaches DLC of Euro Truck Simulator 2 and Road Trip for American Truck Simulator. The announcement was published on Steam on September 25, 2026.
Players will be able to switch between Truck Mode, Car Mode and Coach Mode. Each mode has its own gameplay systems, progression and career, while selected profile elements remain common.
Three modes, three different careers
Truck Mode remains focused on freight transport and building a transport company. Car Mode, introduced with Road Trip, puts more emphasis on exploration and reputation with customers. Coach Mode will centre on operating routes, transporting passengers and maintaining their satisfaction.
Progression is separated between the careers. Car Mode also uses reputation instead of traditional experience points, so its progress follows a different system from the truck-focused career. Each mode therefore has its own progression and gameplay systems.
Money and map exploration stay shared
Money and map exploration are shared between the modes, while progression remains separate.
Position is preserved when switching: the player resumes where they left their truck, coach or car. During a Quick Job, the map also shows the player's current position and the positions of other vehicles.
The active job limits how switching works
Another mode can be selected while the player is not driving, allowing that career to be managed before the next departure. There is one shared restriction across the system: only one active job is allowed at a time.
The full change takes place when the player presses Drive. Once on the road, the navigation and gameplay systems associated with the selected mode become active.
Navigation remains tied to the last mode before departure
At the time of the announcement, navigation was still linked to the last mode driven. A route could not be set or changed for the newly selected mode before the player started moving.
The newly selected mode therefore cannot receive a new or modified route before departure.
Fatigue is shared, but vehicle rules differ
Fatigue Simulation is divided into Rest State and Mandatory Breaks. Rest State represents the character's fatigue and is shared between modes. Mandatory Breaks apply to trucks and coaches, while cars are not subject to them.
Money and map exploration are shared between modes, as is Rest State. Career progression remains separate, and fatigue rules differ according to the vehicle being used.
Coach Mode is described in the announcement, but no availability date is provided. Mode Switch will let players select another mode when they are not driving, then activate that mode's navigation and gameplay systems when they press Drive.
