Sea of Thieves Season 21 launched on September 17 with two time-limited opportunities already under way: a Free Play Weekend running through September 21 on all platforms, followed by Talk Like a Pirate Day through September 22. Season 21 follows the looser structure used in Season 20 rather than dividing its content into distinct headline Acts. Its calendar instead combines recurring weekly boosts from Fight Nights and Emissaries of Fortune with monthly and seasonal activities.
A season built around recurring events
The official calendar also lists Bilge Rats Weekenders, Season 21 Community Weekend and the return of Last Ship Standing: Sloops. The announcement confirms these events are planned, but does not give individual dates for them, so players cannot yet use that list to schedule a specific session.
Custom Seas continues to expand as part of the season’s broader focus on repeatable activities. The free toolset, introduced in Season 20, now lets players save a game state with spawned items and their locations. Multiple Layouts can be saved for each location, giving Custom Seas sessions a way to preserve different setups rather than rebuilding them from scratch each time.
Talk Like a Pirate Day adds a temporary crew signal
From September 17 to September 22, the Parley Pennant is available in the Flag Box. It signals to other crews that a crew is looking to talk, turning an otherwise temporary event item into a clear invitation for interaction on the shared seas.
Using the Parley Pennant successfully three times during the event unlocks the Parley Proficiency Sails. That reward has the clearest immediate deadline in the announcement: the three successful uses must happen before Talk Like a Pirate Day ends on September 22.
Free access, returning cosmetics and the Season Pass
The Free Play Weekend runs from September 17 to September 21 across all platforms. The subscription exemption applies specifically to that weekend. Players interested in the event can also find the Pretty Polly Sails and the previously unseen Pretty Polly Hull returning temporarily to the Emporium for the occasion, although the announcement does not give an end time for their availability.
Season 21 progression continues through two Season Pass tracks. The free pass includes Doubloons, Voyages and cosmetics, while the Premium Tier adds Ancient Coins and the complete Mutiny’s Mark ship set. Reaching level 50 before the season ends awards the Fate’s Light Lantern as a Star Prize. The announcement does not provide an exact end date for Season 21, so that level-50 target has no confirmed calendar deadline beyond the season’s eventual conclusion.
For players deciding what to do first, the dated events set the order: the free-access window ends on September 21, and the Parley Pennant reward remains available until September 22. The other listed events and the season’s final date are still less precise, while Custom Seas offers a lasting practical improvement for players who use saved layouts.
Season 21 therefore puts its most urgent activities at the start of the season and leaves the wider calendar open-ended. The immediate choice is whether to use the free weekend and pursue the Parley Proficiency Sails; the longer-term incentive is steady Season Pass progression, supported by the expanded Custom Seas tools.
