The Steam client is receiving two targeted fixes for Steam Deck in the Preview and Beta channels. The official note, titled “Steam Beta Client Update: August 26th” and published on August 27, 2026, addresses a crash linked to disconnecting a controller and a display issue affecting Remote Play: official Steam post.

This is a Steam client update, not a new version of SteamOS. It does not change the operating system itself, and the note provides no basis for claiming broader improvements to performance, game compatibility or system stability.

The controller disconnect could trigger a crash

The first fix concerns a specific sequence of actions. After disconnecting a controller, suspending the Steam Deck or resuming it could cause the client to crash. Steam lists this scenario among the issues fixed in the Preview and Beta branches.

The change is therefore most relevant to users who regularly switch between a controller and the Steam Deck’s built-in controls, particularly when the device is put to sleep during that transition. The note does not indicate that every Steam Deck crash has been addressed, so this fix should not be read as a general crash-prevention update.

Remote Play devices should regain their status

The second fix affects Remote Play. Some remote devices with the feature enabled were not displayed as “Streamable” in the Steam client. The update targets that status display, which can make a difference when users look for a device from which to start or join a remote game stream.

Steam describes a correction to the identification shown by the client, not a change to Remote Play’s streaming quality, supported games or network requirements. No additional settings change is indicated for this fix.

No stable release date yet

The confirmed distribution currently stops at the Preview and Beta channels. Steam has not announced a date for moving these fixes to the stable branch, and the note does not provide a client version number. Owners using the standard Steam configuration should therefore not assume that both corrections are already available to everyone.

Preview and Beta users must wait for the fix to arrive in their selected branch. Other Steam Deck owners will need to wait for a stable-release announcement; no manual intervention is specified. The associated official page, separate from the note dedicated to these two incidents, is available here: Steam Deck on Steam.

For now, the update has a narrow scope: it may resolve the controller-disconnect crash sequence and restore the “Streamable” label for affected Remote Play devices. It does not amount to a general Steam Deck update, and the performance, compatibility and stable-release questions remain unchanged. Future publications can be followed through the Steam Deck page.
