Managing Clash Royale elixir starts with the defense. Compare the cost of your response with the attack, track the cards already played, and keep the answer to the opponent’s win condition available whenever possible.

Key points to remember

  • Elixir production remains at x1 during the first two minutes.
  • It increases to x2 during the third minute, then reaches x2 and x3 in overtime.
  • The Log costs 2 elixir, compared with 3 for Goblin Barrel.
  • A card returns after four other cards are played by the same player.
  • Events can change the rules. Production is slower in 2v2.

Measure the trade before defending

Compare the cost of your response with the cost of the attack, then consider the damage dealt to your tower.

Supercell cites The Log against Goblin Barrel. The response costs 2 elixir, while the Barrel costs 3. If The Log hits the goblins, the difference is therefore 1 elixir.

Against a tank accompanied by support, slow down or draw the tank away before removing the troop that increases the damage.

SituationUseful decisionCommon mistake
Goblin Barrel announcedKeep The Log or an equivalent spell ready.Use the spell on a small troop, then suffer the Barrel.
Large tank placed behind the towerPrepare a central defense and watch the support.Launch a full push in the same lane.
Small isolated troopRespond at low cost if the risk remains low.Use your best defense too early.

Spend only what the attack requires

Identify the card that can reach your tower. A slow troop gives you more time, while a bridge-based win condition requires a quick response.

  1. Identify the opponent’s win condition.
  2. Choose its best counter from your deck.
  3. Wait for the opponent to commit, unless the tower is in danger.
  4. Eliminate the support that increases the damage or protects the attack.
  5. Add a card only if it prevents real damage.
  6. Support the surviving unit with a cheap card or your win condition.

A troop placed behind the King Tower can prepare a push while your elixir regenerates. This becomes risky against fast pressure in the other lane.

Your main response should remain available before you deploy a slow unit.

Giving up a tower can sometimes limit the loss. An expensive defense can empty your entire bar, so consider the tower’s health, the time remaining and the opponent’s hand.

Count four cards to anticipate the cycle

A card returns after four other cards are played by its owner. This rule helps you anticipate the return of a win condition.

Mentally note the cards in order. Example: Hog Rider, Musketeer, Skeletons, Fireball. The Hog Rider can return after the fourth card.

Three pieces of information are often enough: the win condition, its best counter and the spell that punishes your defense.

The rule also applies to spells. If the only spell that clears your small troop has just been played, light pressure can force an expensive response.

Build a deck around the essential roles

A beginner deck should cover several threats. Include a win condition, ground defense, an air response, area damage and a reliable spell.

RolePriorityQuestion to ask
Win conditionA card that regularly reaches the tower.Which opposing card stops it?
Main defenseA unit or building that slows the threat. Can it pull the threat to the center?
Area damageA response against groups. Is this the right moment?
Air responseA card against flying units. Was it already in the previous cycle?
SpellA spell reserved for a specific interaction.Which card should it hit?

The average cost should match your defense. A heavy deck requires you to plan for attacks. A fast deck punishes placement mistakes more severely.

Keep the same deck for several matches and change only one card at a time. You will identify the weakness you fixed more clearly.

Keep the main defense available

Do not play as soon as your bar fills. A card played without information often gives the initiative to the opponent.

A low-risk card can be deployed from the back. However, keep your main defense in hand.

Overdefending is also expensive. A few points of tower damage do not always justify a second troop and a spell.

A one-elixir advantage does not guarantee an advantage in the match. Check the opponent’s hand before launching another push.

Production remains normal during the first two minutes. It doubles during the third. Overtime speeds up the pace again.

Events can change these rules. In 2v2, production is slower than in standard battles.
