Before entering multiplayer in Age of Empires IV, learn to connect three habits: gather resources, keep production active and scout for information. Mission Zero, the five Art of War challenges and a match against the AI provide a clear progression without forcing you to memorise a build order too early. The official quickstart guide presents these fundamentals through several steps available from the first few minutes.
The game was released on October 28, 2021. Its listing includes a French interface, full audio and subtitles, and minimum requirements of 8 GB of RAM and 50 GB of storage on Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit. The Steam page contains these details.
Start with the opening routine
- Complete Mission Zero the first time you open the game. It launches automatically and introduces resources, villagers, buildings, military units and ageing up.
- Move to Art of War. Its five challenges separate the economy, combat and siege. Replay the exercise linked to your mistake instead of restarting a full match each time.
- Continue with the Norman campaign if you want to remain in solo play; the official article recommends it as an extension of the introduction. In a skirmish, choose one priority for the match, such as producing villagers, exploring or maintaining your army.

After each exercise, verify one concrete result: villagers leave the Town Center quickly, important buildings keep producing and the scout reveals enough terrain to inform your next decision.
Make the economy support the next age
The four resources—food, wood, gold and stone—pay for structures, technologies and units. At the start of a match, select the Town Center and place its rally point on a forest, animals or another resource. New villagers will then move there automatically, reducing idle time during the opening.
When you prepare an age-up, check the Tech Tree or the age icon first. Identify the resource that is missing, then move only the number of villagers needed to correct the balance. Advancing also requires the construction of a landmark. The Abbasid Dynasty is different: it uses a wing of the House of Wisdom, so its requirement must be checked before construction begins.

There is no single resource distribution or numerical threshold that suits every civilization and situation. Read what the interface is asking for, then adjust the economy without starving food or wood gathering for an age-up that is not yet ready.
Let scouting decide the first response
Use the scout to reveal resources, chokepoints, the enemy position and production buildings. Circle your base, investigate useful enemy areas and keep moving instead of leaving it idle. The scout can also bring back sheep, which supports the food supply while showing which parts of the map have already been explored.
That information should shape your first military choice. The World’s Edge tips guide highlights a basic counter triangle: archers are effective against spearmen, spearmen against cavalry, and cavalry against archers. Treat it as a useful reference when scouting identifies one of these units, not as a complete answer to an entire enemy army.

Keep production running while the camera moves
If you have several military buildings of the same type, select them together and queue units in parallel. This limits the chance of an empty queue while your attention is on the scout or army.
Place production buildings in a control group with Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+9. You can recall the group, manage queues and return to the action without repeatedly moving the camera. In early matches, check three things at regular intervals: an active production queue, villagers still being created and a scout still gathering information.
Move to multiplayer when the routine holds
Stay in solo play when you are isolating one mechanic. Use the AI when you want to combine several decisions in a complete match; the official article lists four difficulty levels. Raise the difficulty once you can maintain your economy and production without abandoning exploration.
Steam lists co-op, online PvP and cross-platform multiplayer, with support for up to seven friends. Move online after you can demonstrate the same basic routine against the AI: villagers produced without interruption, an age-up prepared on time and an army selected in response to what the scout found.
Do not search for a universal civilization, opening or unit composition from the first match. The quickstart information does not establish an optimal build, a complete cost breakdown or an ideal composition. The useful link is simpler: scouting reveals the threat, the economy funds the answer and production turns it into units.
Fix these habits before going online
- Leaving the Town Center without a rally point, so new villagers become idle.
- Starting the age-up landmark before checking the missing resource.
- Producing the same unit type without observing the enemy composition.
- Following the scout with the camera while production queues run empty.
- Entering multiplayer before you can manage the economy, scouting and army at the same time.
The guidance tied to the game’s 2021 release does not establish the current state of its tutorials, balance, interface or content in 2026. The archer-spearman-cavalry triangle also excludes other unit matchups, and no number alone determines the best moment to advance. Check the information shown by your version before adopting a specialised strategy.
The practical route is Mission Zero, Art of War, an AI match, then multiplayer. At every stage, watch resources, scouting and production; once those habits hold together, adapt the distribution and unit choice to the map and the opponent.
