[Guide] RuneScape: What to Bank Before You Sell Resources

In RuneScape, a resource is not defined by its market value alone. Ores, logs, fish, crops, herbs and runes can support several skills, so the right decision starts with the next equipment, location or piece of content you want to unlock. The official RuneScape overview explains how skill levels open new possibilities.

The official skills guide covers the main uses of these resources. It does not provide a profitability ranking, a current price or the precise cost of every upgrade, so no universal list of items to keep can be established.

Choose the next unlock first

Pick one priority skill and write down the next objective attached to it. This keeps your stock focused instead of spreading it across several projects and discovering too late that a needed material has already been sold.

  • Ores: check their uses in Smithing, Crafting and Invention.
  • Logs: identify whether they support Fletching, Firemaking or Construction.
  • Fish: keep them according to your food needs.
  • Crops and herbs: connect them to your Farming and Herblore activities.
  • Runes: relate them to your Magic progression before selling them.

Ores deserve particular care. Jagex links them to Smithing, Crafting and Invention while also stating that they can be sold. If Smithing is your priority, bank the surplus until the next objective is secured; selling immediately can reduce your progression options across several skills.

Logs require the same distinction. A reserve kept for Fletching may not cover what you need after switching to Firemaking or Construction. Separate the quantity intended for progression from any surplus, then reassess if your objective changes.

Use the bank as a decision buffer

  1. Choose your main skill. Note the next unlock and the resource that can support it.
  2. Classify each item by use. An ore, log, herb or rune may serve several activities, so do not judge it solely by its market value.
  3. Set aside anything uncertain. The bank stores goods, as the official RuneScape Steam page explains. Keeping an unclear item there preserves your options.
  4. Spend toward the chosen objective. Use the resources that directly support your current skill first.
  5. Check after the unlock. Once you gain a level or open new content, verify whether the next step still consumes the same material. Change priorities only when it no longer does.

Farming resources should be judged by how they are processed. Jagex states that Farming provides crops useful to other skills, including Herblore, while herbs are used to create potions. Fishing also provides, among other things, food. Selling these items without checking the next activity can remove a progression resource, even though the available figures do not establish a current price or a precise transformation ratio.

Runes belong to the same planning loop as Magic. Runecrafting lets you make the runes used for spells, but their priority depends on how you practise the skill. Jagex counts 29 skills in RuneScape, so a reserve that suits one activity cannot automatically be treated as the best choice for every account.

Sell only what your project no longer needs

For skill progression: keep the resources directly tied to your chosen skill and use the bank as a temporary reserve. After obtaining the next unlock, reassess the surplus rather than liquidating the entire stock. The old reserve may still help if you switch skills later.

For trading: Steam presents the Grand Exchange as a tool for trading between players. The available data gives no current price, margin or acquisition rate, so compare the in-game transaction cost with the item’s intended use before turning a progression resource into currency.

For a non-member account: account for the limited access to members-only skills. Jagex states that most of these skills can be trained up to level 5 by non-members, with the exception of Invention. Steam presents membership as providing access to eight additional skills, more than 120 quests and the entire world map. A reserve intended for Invention is therefore not equally urgent for every player.

Errors that waste useful materials

  • Selling ore without checking its uses in Smithing, Crafting and Invention.
  • Treating every type of log the same despite their different roles in Fletching, Firemaking and Construction.
  • Assuming that a crop, herb, fish or rune is immediate income when it may support the next activity.
  • Following a spending priority without knowing the price, cost or objective involved.
  • Keeping an old reserve after changing skills without checking whether it remains useful.
  • Presenting a profitability method as universal when no current economic figures are available.

Questions that come up before selling

What should you do with a resource whose use is uncertain ?

Put it in the bank, then identify the skill and next unlock it could support. This keeps the option open without forcing a rushed purchase or sale.

When should you use the Grand Exchange ?

Use it once the item is confirmed surplus rather than a resource needed for the next step. Check the transaction cost in-game, because the available information is not enough to guarantee profitability.

When should you change priorities ?

Change them when the next equipment, location or piece of content no longer requires the same resources. Keep the old reserve until that check is complete, then reassign only the confirmed surplus.

The practical rule is simple: secure the material for one clear skill objective, bank anything whose use is uncertain, and sell only what remains after the next step is covered. That preserves flexibility without pretending that one resource priority fits every RuneScape account.
