In Stardew Valley, friendship grows mainly through gifts, conversations and birthdays. Keep a few easy-to-produce presents ready, then focus on two or three villagers at a time to unlock recipes, events and romance options more efficiently.
The official Steam page notes that every villager has an individual schedule, birthday and set of events. For more gaming tips, see articles and latest news.
Know the gift rules before you start
- One heart represents 250 friendship points.
- Each villager accepts two gifts per week, plus one birthday gift.
- A loved gift on a birthday earns far more than an ordinary present.
- At festivals, talk to villagers before starting the activity or leaving the area.

Build a weekly gift route
Open the Social tab to see each villager's hearts and which gifts you have already given that week. Prioritise people you regularly pass. Pierre, Robin, Gus and Clint are convenient targets if you already visit their shops.
Conversation earns points, but a loved gift earns more. Universally loved items are rare and may be needed for a quest or worth selling, so a renewable supply is usually the safer choice. Check preferences on gift reference page before committing a valuable item.
- On Sunday, check the calendar outside Pierre's shop.
- Write down the week's birthdays.
- Put two or three suitable gifts in a chest near the exit.
- Keep museum items and crafting resources separate.
- Give no more than two regular gifts to each villager before Sunday night.
- On a birthday, use a loved item and check the hearts in the Social tab.
Do not give an expensive item without checking the recipient's preference. A hated gift reduces friendship, and higher quality does not make it a good choice.

Choose a loved gift instead of a rare one
The best present is loved by its recipient without putting your farm's resources under unnecessary pressure. A loved gift earns 80 base points, compared with 45 for a liked gift. That gap makes checking preferences especially worthwhile before a birthday.
| Situation | Useful choice | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Early game | Forage or cook an item liked by your target. | Buying an expensive present blindly. |
| Birthday tomorrow | Save a loved gift, ideally one of good quality. | Using your last one for the second weekly gift. |
| Rare item | Save it for someone who loves it or for a guaranteed quest. | Giving it as a universal gift without checking exceptions. |
| Two gifts already given | Talk to the character and wait for the reset. | Trying to give a third regular present. |
Preferences remain individual. A flower or fruit may please one villager and upset another. Dialogue can offer clues, but it does not replace checking before a birthday.

Find villagers around their schedules
A villager's schedule can change with the season, weather, special days and certain events. Their route may also change as your progress develops, so do not assume they will always stay at the same shop.
Check the relevant schedule before making an urgent delivery. If a door is closed, do not wait outside until night. Fish, complete a quest or visit another target, then try again the next day.
- Before 9 a.m.: look for villagers leaving their homes or starting early.
- At noon: group visits in Pelican Town, at the saloon and in open shops.
- After 5 p.m.: finish near homes rather than outside a closed shop.
- In bad weather: check the schedule again before repeating your usual route.

Use festivals to gain friendship points
Festivals bring several villagers together. Talking to them earns 20 points, just as a normal conversation does, so make the rounds before starting the main activity.
The Flower Dance requires preparation: dancing with your partner adds one heart, or 250 points. At the Luau, the ingredient added to the soup can raise or lower friendship with a large part of the village. At the Feast of the Winter Star, the secret friend's gift is worth five times the usual points.
The Night Market also allows gifts, but the two-gift weekly limit remains in effect. New festivals and events from version 1.6 appear in official 1.6 changelog.

Trigger heart events at the right time
Reaching a heart threshold does not always trigger an event immediately. You may need to enter a specific place at a particular time, with the required weather, season or progression level.
After reaching a new threshold, check that character's conditions and add the visit to your route. Save at the start of the day if the event includes a choice, since some answers affect friendship.
For the twelve marriage candidates, eight hearts allow you to offer a bouquet. This unlocks the ninth and tenth hearts. The bouquet also grants points, but it does not replace a weekly gift. Giving bouquets to every bachelor and bachelorette can trigger a group event, followed by a period when gifts are refused.

Frequently asked questions
How many gifts can I give a villager?
Two per week, plus one birthday gift. The counter resets on Sunday.
Which gift earns the most friendship?
A loved gift is the best regular choice. Give it on the birthday to benefit from the bonus.
Why is a villager not in their usual location?
The season, weather, special days and your progress can change their schedule. Check their plan for the day.
At what threshold can I offer a bouquet?
Marriage candidates can receive a bouquet at eight hearts. This opens progress toward the ninth and tenth hearts.
How do I prepare for a birthday without wasting a rare item?
Keep a loved gift for the person concerned. Good quality increases its value, but never makes up for a hated item.
